PA DeMolay News - 2010 Philadelphia Area Honor Roll Challenge
Author: "Dad" Rick Freedman

On Friday, August 20, 2010, PA DeMolay's Philadelphia Region Chapters held their 13th Honor Roll Challenge Dinner and Night Out. The Honor Roll Challenge is a special program which encourages scholastic excellence. Winners receive an all-expense paid night out to an exclusive restaurant with fellow winners and a fun night out afterwards. Due to the cost involved, the Honor Roll Challenge Night Out has been sponsored by Masonic Lodges (more specifically St. Alban No. 529) for the past 10 of the 13 years. This year, there was a record-breaking fourteen winners from the combined Chapters in the area.

The following outstanding young men received Honor Roll status (all A's and B's on their report cards – no C's or below) to compile the 2010 class of scholastic champions:

  • Delaware Valley Chapter: Tyler Bausinger, Joe Berendsohn, George Downs, III, Aaron Richardson, Jonathan Webster
  • Friendship-Bray Chapter: Zach Cohen, Alexi Dinerstein, Julien Dinerstein, David Gerstenfeld, Blake Heckler, Danny Perlman, Josh Shapey
  • Northeast Chapter: Alex Garcia, Jeff Hample

(Unfortunately, Aaron Richardson from Del Val couldn't join us due to a family commitment.)

This year's special venue, based on suggestions from the winners, was The Melting Pot in Center City Philadelphia.  The Melting Pot is a classy, upscale restaurant and provides an incredibly fun and interactive dining experience!  Here's a snapshot of what they got: First Course - Any one of six table-side made fresh cheese fondues with the following for dipping: French, honey wheat and rosemary bread cubes, apple wedges, carrot and celery sticks and cauliflower. Second Course - Fresh salad greens and veggies with their favorite dressing. Third Course – “Cook your own” succulent chicken, jumbo shrimp, delicious bite size tenderloin steak cubes and spinach ravioli in their choice of one of two cooking syles; either Court Boullion or Bourguignonne -  then dip away to cook!   Teriyaki glaze, ginger plum or a mild curry yogurt sauce accompanied the selections. Final Course - This is what they were waiting for!  The winners chose from the Melting Pot's famous dark, white, or milk chocolate or bananas foster fondues, all melted and swirled with accompaniments such as cheesecake bites, pound cake, brownies, fresh strawberries and bananas, Rice Krispies treats and s'mores! But wait – there's more! After dinner, the winners headed to Philadelphia's famous South Street where they enjoyed watching the sights, had lots of laughs, and even bought some cool video games, DVD's and other bonus gifts with an additional $75.00 in cash they received.

Sound great? It is! It pays to be a DeMolay and get good grades in school! Once more, a huge shout-out and THANK YOU goes to St. Alban Lodge No. 529, assisted by Brotherhood Lodge No. 126 in Philadelphia for sponsoring this incredible event!
